Shoah Survivors

I am a child of Holocaust survivors
and am now facing a crisis with my
90-year-old mother.
She broke a hip and I may have to
look into a nursing home for her if she
is not able to go home. She has made
remarkable progress (because
Holocaust survivors are strong), but in
order for her to return to her own
home, she would have to have quite a
bit of help until she regained her
strength.
The problem is that she has limited
funds. My father passed away 21 years
ago, but my college-age son lives with
her and is there with her at night.
When I tried to find out if the Jewish
agencies could help out financially, I
was told that there was no money for
that.
In-home care is very expensive and
her funds are limited. I offered to split
the cost and was again told that there
is no money for this kind of help.
There are scholarships for campers
who can't afford camp costs and JELS
loans for college students who need
help. These are wonderful programs
and I would not want them changed.
But are we paying lip service to our
few still living survivors who cannot
afford Fleischman Residence or the
Marvin & Betty Danto Family Health
Care Center.
Is the Jewish community buying into
the stereotype of all Jews being rich?
Needless to say, my mother and I are
very disappointed and get a sense that
the Jewish community is not taking
care of its own. The program that Dr.
Charles Silow runs ("Helping Them
Cope," July 11, page 25) is admirable
and important, but "putting your
money where your mouth is" would
even be more so.
