"Great Gershwin" will offer a bit of an offstage show to Friday evening ticket holders. Members of the Detroit Area Art Deco Society (DAADS) will be dressed in the clothing stylish during the Gershwin years and set up a booth with some vintage pieces of art. "After we heard about the Gershwin concerts, we decided that we wanted to be part of it all because that's our era," says Robin Cohen, president of the group and owner of Antiques on Main in Royal Oak. "We like the feeling of going back in time, and in those years, going to a concert was a very important event." Cohen, also a member of Temple Shir Shalom, expects that women members of DAADS will be wearing flapper dresses, while the men will be in pinstripe suits. The art booth will be one way of welcom- ing the crowd to Meadow Brook and getting people into the mood of the repertoire. The group, which also wants to support the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, has dressed up for other events and causes that recall the era when Art Deco reached peak interest. They most recently donned 1920s wear for a special program to support building renova- tion at the Redford Theatre. "I have a tremendous amount of enthusi- asm for anything that allows people to make connections between the different arts," says Jeffrey Kahane, who will be conducting and Some concert goers may copy the playing piano at the Gershwin concerts. "I attire of composer George think that's enriching for the audience and a Gershwin, shown here in a pin- real bonus." — Suzanne Chessler stripe suit. The advancement of Kahane's career onto distant stages in major cities throughout the world brought along recordings that have made his talents accessible to the homes of fans. He recently finished a CD of Bach violin concertos featuring Hillary Hahn. It will be out in September. The musician-conductor, also a win- ner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1983 and the first Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award in 1987, is in the midst of a busy summer. He played all five Beethoven concertos with the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra and will be appearing at Lincoln Center and Tanglewood in addition to his own California venues. "When I'm on vacation, I spend most of my time relaxing with my family and reading," says the performer, whose wife, Martha, is a psychologist and whose son and daughter are entering the world of entertainment. Gabriel, a recent graduate of Brown University, is a jazz pianist and composer who has been on stage with his father and is pursuing his career in New York. Annie, 15, who decided on her own to have a bat mitzvah and led her family back into synagogue activity, is a serious dance student striving toward working in musical theater. As Kahane takes the outdoor stage at Meadow Brook, he will bring experience as artistic director of the newly founded Green Music Festival in Sonoma County and of programs that involve family attendance. He has invited high-school choirs to sing to the music of symphony instru- mentalists, and he has planned concerts targeted at young people of various ages. "Musicians need very good concentra- tion when performing outdoors because of the noise that can come from such things as planes flying overhead," he says. "I've done a lot of outdoor play- ing." t , PS• 0 so 0 0 1 ' ve r"t ist '' NO V FOR YOUR CLIENTS! FOR YOUR FRIENDS! FOR YOUR FAMILY! FOR YOU!
