Modigliani, one of the great masters of early modern art, died in 1920 at age 35. He became and has remained very popular with the general public, but art critics of the last generation have tended to downgrade him. His place in the art world, however, is apparently looking up. In the next few years, a veritable Modigliani feast will be offered to art lovers. Currently at the L.A. County Museum of Art is the exhibit "Modigliani & the Artists of Montparnasse," a show consisting of 54 paintings, drawings and sculptures by Amedeo Modigliani and an Modigliani additional 22 works by his contempo- raries. It runs through Sept. 28. Another major exhibit just closed in Paris. Finally, the Jewish Museum in New York plans an exhibit concentrating on the artist's Italian Jewish back- ground. The 60-piece show will run May 21-Sept. 19, 2004. But, there's more. Amedeo will hit the big screen in two films. A feature film about his life, starring Andy Garcia, just went into production in Florida, and an Italian bio-pic is in the planning stages. Modigliani's life, as any biography will tell you, was colorful enough for several films, and his extended family also offers up some interesting charac- ters. There's his brother, VITTORIO, a Nate Bloom is the Oakland, Calif,- based editor ofwww.Jewhoo.com founder of the Italian Socialist party and a strong early supporter of Zionism, and his distant cousin, FRANCO MODIGLIANI, a Nobel Prize winner in economics who fled Mussolini's anti-Semitic laws and set- tled in America. •Omelettes •Daily Lunch & Dinner Specials Homemade Sandwiches vet dam. ea4weofiend 20.cation4 Farmington Hills Detroit Comerica Park Stadium Liev Levitates Up Actor LIEV SCHREIBER, 35, may never be a major star.
