near their shul, Young Israel of
Southfield.
His work requires a very understand-
ing spouse, which he has, Dr. Gruber
says.
"His schedule is always unpre-
dictable," Andrea says. "But my family
has a keen perspective on life because of
Scott's work. He missed many birthday
parties and he can be on the phone on
vacation, but we understand that people
are very sick and their lives hinge on the
generosity of others."
On the other hand, she adds, "We, as
a family, understand what quality time
is. We always try to gather for Shabbat
dinners. Barring a transplant, my hus-
band's a very devoted father."

The future for Dr. Gruber's transplant
program is very exciting. Last December,
his group obtained a certificate of need
from the state of Michigan to perform
pancreas transplants. He already has
patients on the active list for the proce-
dure. This is especially important for
people with long-standing diabetes, he
says.
'A kidney and pancreas transplant, a
seven-hour surgery, can correct kidney
failure and render the patient non-dia-
betic," he says.
Pancreas transplant surgery is also per-
formed without a kidney, the doctor
adds, and can remedy a diabetic's poor
quality of life.
Dr. Gruber's team works with a high-
risk population, mainly African
Americans who are medically under-
served. Some have been on dialysis for
over six years, he says, "and the longer a
patient has been on dialysis, the worse
will be the outcome after the kidney
transplant." And yet, he says, his team is
crettinc, outstanding results.
But perhaps the best expert to com-
ment on Dr. Gruber's achievements is
his patient.
"Dr. Gruber is a magician — I was
never in a lot of pain," Pat Cromer says
about her kidney transplant. "I asked
him, 'Why are you a kidney transplant
doctor?'" She says he replied, "'Because
life amazes me.'''
