Hillel Day School of Metropolitan
Detroit's math enrichment and accelera-
tion classes paid big dividends. Twenty
fourth- and fifth-graders scored honors
in the Elementary Division of the Math
Olympiads. The competition drew
82,000 students from every state and 25
other countries.
"Our students have many talents,"
said Principal Robyn Glickman at a
Hillel awards program during a morning
minyan for grades 3 5. "Some of us are
artistic, athletic, musical, literary or sci-
entific. Today, we are honoring those
students that have shown strong analyti-
cal problem-solving skills."
Hillel fielded a team of 210 students.
Team members took part in five month-
ly contests of five problems each as well
as practice sessions. Their supervisor and
coach was Shoshana Goldschlag, Lower
School Math Department head.
Hillel earned the Highest Team
Achievement Plaque for placing in the
90th percentile or higher. It was named
to the Grade Five National Meritorious
Achievement List for posting the highest
score.
All participants received a Math
Olympiad Certificate.

Portney and David Portney. Fifth-grade
participants were Matthew Ackerman,

C.J. Apel, Carly Cykiert, Lauren
Garelik, Lauren Goldstein, Alissa Graff;
Scott Haber, Jared Hirsch, Zachary
Hyman, Michelle Kappy, Marc
Liebowitz, Joshua Lowenthal, Erin
Rhodes and Ryan Rosen.
Gold Olympiad Trophies went to
Matthew Ackerman and Marc Liebowitz
of Grade 5 and Adam McDowell of
Grade 4. They posted the highest scores
in their grades.
Matthew Ackerman was one of 57
fifth graders worldwide to earn the Dr.
George Lenchner Medallion for a per-
fect score of 25 points. Marc Liebowitz
was one of only 109 fifth graders world-
wide to score 24.
Gold Pins went to students in the top
2 percent worldwide, including
Matthew Ackerman, Marc Liebowitz,
Ryan Rosen and Scott Haber.
Silver Pins represented students in the
90th to 97th percentile worldwide,
including Adam McDowell, Michelle
Kappy, Zachary Hyman, Daniel Portney,
David Portney and Michelle Gross.
The Math Olympiad Embroidered
Felt Patch went to the top 50 percent of
all participants worldwide. Hillel recipi-
ents were Joshua Bernard, Michelle
Gross, Adam McDowell, Jesse Media,
Daniel Portney, David Portney, Matthew
Ackerman, Alissa Graff, Scott Haber,
Zachary Hyman, Michelle Kappy, Marc
