ollowing the northwestern
movement of the Jewish
population in metropolitan
Detroit, Jewish Family
Service plans to move its headquarters
from Southfield to a new facility on
the south side of Maple Road in West
Bloomfield across from the main
entrance of the Eugene and Marcia
Applebaum Jewish Community
Campus, Maple and Drake.
The existing agency headquarters in
Southfield, renovated in 1976, is out-
dated for today's needs and has
become too costly to maintain, said
Norman Keane, JFS executive director.
JFS handles about 10,000 clients in
areas all around Detroit.
So far, over $5 million has been
raised in a capital campaign to build
the Sally A. & Graham A. Orley and
Suzanne E. & Joseph H. Orley Jewish
Family Service building — a 30,000-
square-foot, two-story facility.
The $8 million projected goal is an
estimate, said Mark Davidoff, Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
executive director and chief operating
officer. The final plans and specifica-
tions have been sent to the township
for review and approval, and the hope
is for a building permit from the
township soon.
JFS provides a wide range of social
and behavioral health services, includ-

ing outpatient mental health counsel-
ing, immigration and citizenship serv-
ices, an addiction-recovery program,
adoption services, geriatric-care man-
agement, crisis support, and escorted
transportation for older and physically
challenged individuals.
"We're moving full speed ahead and
we hope to break ground before win-
ter," Davidoff said.
The needs for a larger presence in
West Bloomfield is great, said Edythe
Jackier, who co-chairs the JFS capital
Campaign with Kathleen Wilson-
Fink.
"With the movement of our com-
munity, it has become increasingly
clear that more families would be best
served by moving the agency to a loca-
tion more central to a growing popu-
lation," Jackier said.
JFS rents space in a West Bloomfield
office building and owns the South-
field building.
The plan is to sell the building on
Greenfield Road and rent space for a
branch office "to maintain a substan-
tial presence in the Huntington
Woods, Oak Park and Southfield
areas" once the Orley building is com-
pleted, Fink said.
"We're making sure that we have the
sites available geographically and the
appropriate kind of space to serve the
client populations," said Keane.
"Clearly, in West Bloomfield, we're
not able to do that in the fashion that
we need to today."
