Lovy's book, one in a series that pin- points places to entertain children around major cities, is broken down by county. "I've been to every place I men- tioned," says Lovy, a former media- relations specialist for the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. "One of the most exciting was the Parade Studio, where there are free tours to see how Thanksgiving Day floats are made." When Lovy was married two years ago, she decided against movies as activities to share with her stepdaugh- ters, Sonya, 11, and Sarah, 8. Instead, she wanted to track down new attrac- tions they could experience together. With recommenda- tions from family members and friends, she planned their time. Parks, museums, restaurants, the- aters, stores and much more became destinations and then part of the more than 250 "fun things to see and do" referenced in her book. There are no "chain" establishments because Lovy, a freelance writer who has worked for newspapers, wanted to suggest unique experiences. Lovy's descriptions reach from Kart 2 Kart, a high-tech go-cart track in Sterling Heights, to Gayle's Chocolates, a candy factory/store in Royal Oak. She also includes a calendar of recur- ring events and a phone directory for making contacts ahead of visits. Maps, cost-saving tips and Web sites are provided to help entertainment seekers find their way. "Making plans with my stepdaugh- ters helped me get to know them," says Lovy, who spent eight months explor- ing and writing. "Both girls are very open and honest with their opinions." — Suzanne Chessler Lelli's Traditional "Rollback" is On!!
