Larry Kaufman and Jeff Van Loon, 32, the owners of Brooklyn Bagel in Bloomfield Hills, have been friends since the fourth grade. The two men col- laborated, outside other work obligations, to realize their longtime dream of starting a business. Now they take turns on the 4 a.m. shift, kneading and shaping bagel dough. "I have always wanted a business and was excited when Jeff told me about the idea," says Kaufman, who is presently a mechanical engineer for Ford Motor Company. Van Loon, a second-year Wayne State law student, once owned an office fur- niture company and was looking for the right opportunity to try entrepreneurship again.
