eace sometimes starts with individuals learning to take
those first faltering steps together to reveal themselves,
their stories, their beliefs, their fears.
So it is with a group of 12 courageous women in Ann Arbor
— six Jews and six Arabs — who yearn for peace in the
Middle East.
Together they have found a process to discuss their personal
stories, cultures and political differences — and still find corn-
mon ground.
For almost a year, meeting twice a month, they have talked and
learned the power of listening about issues they've never been able to discuss with the other
side before. Arab women understanding the horror of the Holocaust. Jewish women recog-
nizing the pain of Arab displacement to refugee camps when Israel became a state.
Staff Writer Sharon Luckerman spent many hours in Ann Arbor interviewing these
women who show the possibility of peace — when it starts with individuals.
