RITA ALTMAN RIFKIN, 78, of Southfield, died July 2, 2003. Born in Ohio, she attended public school in Lancaster and received her bachelor of arts degree from Ohio R in State University. In 1946, she and her husband, Ellis, moved to Detroit, where she worked in retail merchandising. Mrs. Rifkin was active in the Congregation Ahavas Achim Sisterhood, Hadassah and the National Council of Jewish Women, where she served as president for two terms. Later, Mrs. Rifkin enrolled at Wayne State University, receiving a master of sci- ence in library science. She then served as a school librarian in the Southfield public schools and worked on the library committee at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. In 1982, the Rifkins started a chain of Mail Boxes Etc. stores in Oakland coun- ty; Mrs. Rifkin was corporate secretary of Communications Stations Inc., which owned the franchises for the stores. During her life, Mrs. Rifkin traveled to many parts of the world, including Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where she had rel- atives. She even learned Russian to be able to speak with them. She also made many trips to Israel and various European countries. Mrs. Rifkin is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ellis Rifkin; son, Joel Rifkin of Florida; daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Barry Rosen of Farmington Hills; grandchildren, Shari and Aaron Rosen; sister, Lois Krechmer of
