Washington/JTA — Iran has tested a
missile that could reach Israel. "This is
very bad news for us," a senior Israeli
source told the Jerusalem Post.
The U.S. State Department said it has
very serious concerns" about the Iranian
missile tested recently.
"We've seen Iran's efforts to develop its
missile capabilities, including flight test-
ing, as a threat to the region and a threat
to U.S. interests in the region," State
Department spokesman Richard
Boucher said.
Iran says the long-range, surface-to-
surface missile, which military analysts
say could reach the Jewish state, is solely
a deterrent.

Holocaust Denial
Sentence Upheld

D IAMONDS & F INE JEWELRY

Paris/JTA — The European Court of
Human Rights threw out an appeal by a
French Holocaust denier.
The court upheld the conviction
against Roger Garaudy, who was sen-
tenced for denying the existence of gas
chambers in Nazi Germany concentra-
tion camps. Garaudy was sentenced to
nine months in prison, by a French
court in 1998, for crimes against
humanity, racial defamation and incite-
ment to racial hatred following the pub-
lication of his book The Founding Myths
of Israeli Policy, which is based on the
Holocaust denial theories of French aca-
demic Robert Faurisson.
In rejecting the appeal, the European
court said there is no basis to Garaudy's
claim that he had been denied a fair
trial, and that his work "systematically
placed into question crimes against
humanity committed by the Nazis
against the Jewish community."

Ramallah/JTA — Mahmoud Abbas
resigned from the Fatah movement's top
decision-making body.
In a letter to Palestinian Authority
President Yasser Arafat, Abbas also
threatened to quit as P.A. prime minis-
ter. Officials of Fatah, the main compo-
nent of the Palestine Liberation
Organization, refused to accept Abbas'
resignation from the movement's
Central Committee. Abbas' move may
be an attempt to gain more support

from Fatah members for his conciliatory
policies toward Israel. Abbas has faced
criticism that he is not working hard
enough to gain the release of Palestinians
held by Israel.

Jewish Sites
Are Targeted

Berlin/JTA — A Palestinian terror sus-
pect has admitted in a German court
that he took part in planning
hand-grenade attacks on Jewish targets
in Dusseldorf and Berlin.
The attacks, however, were never car-
ried out. The information was divulged
during a trial of suspected members of
the Al-Tawhid group, which is consid-
ered to be part of the Al Qaida network.
Claudia Neeuhaus, spokesperson for
Dusseldorf's Higher Regional Court,
told JTA that the Palestinian suspect,
Mustafa A., said the targets were to be a
Jewish-owned bar in Dusseldorf, as well
as a local discotheque that is popular
among a Jewish clientele and the Jewish
Museum in Berlin.

Israel Lights
Up Camels

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel is putting
flourescent strips on camels in an
attempt to prevent car accidents in the
Negev Desert.
The first 40 camels were outfitted
with the strips this week, and as many as
1,000 more could be tagged soon, Israeli
officials said. The effort is an attempt to
reduce the number of car crashes involv-
ing camels. Ten people are estimated to
have died in such crashes during the past
two years.

Orthodox Union
Picks Youth Leader

New York/JTA — The Orthodox Union
named a veteran Canadian youth leader
as head of its national youth group,
which had been clouded by a sex-abuse
scandal.
On July 3, the centrist Orthodox
group named Zale Newman of Toronto,
a 35-year veteran of its National
Conference of Synagogue Youth, as
national director.
Newman, the creator of the educa-
tional program "Uncle Moishy and the
Mitzvah Men," vowed to fight assimi-
lation and intermarriage.
