Jewish Stars Miller Heads Student Group At Seminary U-M Rowers Finish 4th MIKE ROESENBAUM Special to the Jewish News A fourth place finish in the NCAA championships and its third Big Ten title in four years capped a strong season for the University of Michigan women's rowing team and coach Mark Rothstein. In seven years, Rothstein has led the Wolverines to six straight NCAA berths, finishing as high as second in 2001. The Ann Arbor native played football at Central Michigan before he transferred to U-M and took up rowing as a partici- pant, then a coach. "Initially, I brought that football men- tality to my coaching; it didn't always work," he admits. "Some concepts are similar, like the work ethic. The training is quite different, but the team concepts are quite similar." Rothstein coached the women's club team for five years before rowing became a U-M varsity sport in 1996. He's since won two Big Ten and two Central Region Coach of the Year awards and was the national Coach of the Year in 2001. The Jewish Academy of Metro Detroit's nine varsity teams gave out the following awards for the 2002-03 season: female athlete of the year, Jennifer Beitner; male athlete of the year, Sam Yashinsky; scholar-athlete, Jason Garden; girls basketball MVPs, Emily Shepley and Fallon Garfield-Turner; girls tennis MVPs, Jennifer Beitner and Susan Goldis. Boys cross country MVP, Josh Diskin, and outstanding teammate, Jeremy Baruch; boys golf MVP, Aaron Newman, and outstanding teammate, Josh Cohen; girls swimming MVPs, Arica Jacobson and Allison Shatz, out- standing teammate, Frayda Kresch, out- standing perservance, Rachel Jacobson. Boys basketball MVPs, Adam Greenbaum and Levi Stewart, outstand- ing teammates, Vadim Avshalumov and Andrew Garon, Jaguar Service Award, Jordan Weiss; girls volleyball MVP, Nicki Milgrom, outstanding teammate, Sarah Sallen; girls soccer MVP, Jennifer Beitner, outstanding teammate, Keren Stiebel; baseball MVP, Alex Tapper, out- standing teammate, Ari Mendelson. Jewish high school tennis players earned numerous post-season honors. North Farmington sophomore Mike Kaufinan, Bloomfield Hills Andover sophomore Howie Migdal and the West Bloomfield doubles team of seniors Jeff 7/11 2003 74 Zeman and Dan Seidman all earned first-team All-State, All-County and All- Area honors. Andover freshman Isaac Kalo was named first team All-State and All-Area and second team All-County in singles; Ann Arbor Pioneer junior Jason Hitchcock was first team All-State in doubles. Andover freshman Brett Powell was selected second team All-County and honorable mention All-State in doubles. Andover junior John Beitner was second team All-County in doubles. West Bloomfield sophomore David Murav and senior Dan Feldman, plus Andover sophomore Jeff Taxe, were honorable mention All-County in singles, while Groves seniors Mike Morton and Peter Rosenberg, plus Andover senior Justin Victor, were honorable mention All- County in doubles. Murav was also hon- orable mention All-Area in singles. Three local soccer stars gained All- State honorable mention nods: Sabrina Must of Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook- Kingswood, Danielle Steinberg from Bloomfield Hills Roeper and Andover's Emily Taxe. Birmingham Groves senior pitcher Mike Disner and West Bloomfield soph- omore third baseman Brett Borock were selected All-County honorable mention. North Farmington senior catcher Amy Berke earned the same in softball. Ann Arbor Huron senior tennis player Aaron Silver was a Free Press Scholar- Athlete. University of Michigan defenseman Danny Richmond was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round — 31st overall — in the NHL Entry Draft. Richmond will likely remain at U-M as a sophomore this sea- son. The North Farmington/West Bloomfield Cobras 10-year-old travel baseball team includes seven Jewish play- ers on its 12-man squad. The Cobras have won two tournament champi- onships, are 36-5 overall and finished 19-0 in Federation League play. Jewish players include shortstop/pitcher Danny Deutsch, first baseman/outfielder Ryan Bloom, third baseman/outfielder Matt Fagan, second baseman/outfielder Michael Rubenstein, pitcher/outfielder Blake King, and pitcher/catchers Jeremy Burstein and Jake Balbes. The RSSO represents the 130 rabbinical students at New York-based JTS. In addition, he will be student liaison to the lay board of over- seers.
