to buy items and has ordered mem-
orabilia from Japan and San
Francisco, which has a large Sanrio
store. In Michigan, she frequents
My Fancy, a store in West
Bloomfield. Target stores sell
Sanrio, but their selection is differ-
ent from other stores. A true collec-
tor can tell the difference. "The
color of Hello Kitty is a deeper

pink. She does not look like the
original," says Deman.
A Royal Oak resident, Deman
lives with her husband, Derek, 4-
year-old son, Julian, and their two
cats Spirit and Batz IVIaru. Batz is
named after another character in
Sanrio's line, a penguin. "Choco cat,
also a character, is a black cat like
Spirit. He wasn't created until after

I got Spirit or I would have named
him differently," explains Deman.
Her vacation fantasy? "I would
love to go to Japan one day to visit
Sanrio Puroland. It's just like
Disneyland but with the Hello Kitty
theme."
Only a person young at heart can
make such a dream come true.
