Dr. Yurfost, one of our senior sur- geons at HaEmek Medical Center, affiliated with the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel, has, in fact, lost one of his eyes and has just now begun to see slightly from his second eye. He is able to see vague images and light and the prognosis is cautious opti- mism. Shrapnel is still embedded in his remaining eye, and our beloved doctor must undergo further operations. Hadar Gidin, the 21-year old female security guard who blocked the suicide bomber's path with her body, is still hospitalized. She was critically wound- ed; our physicians fought an epic battle to save her life and her legs. Miraculously, she has taken her first steps. She still has a long road to full recovery, but the prognosis for this brave woman is very good. I visited Hadar together with a cou- ple on a goodwill trip here from the United States. They asked. Hadar if she was angry and what she felt now. Her answer was, "I'm not angry at anyone. I'm just very grateful that I was able to stop the terrorist from killing more people." To my knowledge, the appearance of these rabbis in the halls of Congress marked the first time that representa- tives of the organized Jewish communi- ty have raised their voices in protest against the Bush tax cuts and the dra- conian cutbacks in services that are resulting from this policy, all across the country. Our American Jewish community has stood silent for too long in the face of this administration's manifestly unjust and unwise right-wing domestic agenda. A notable exception has been the National Council of Jewish Women, which has been waging a lonely fight against President Bush's effort to pack the federal courts with judges who do not support reproductive rights or the separation of church and state and who give short shrift to civil liberties.
