he problem is not just about
running out of oil or who is
providing it," said former
Clinton administration Chief of Staff
John Podesta. The problem, he said, is
"we are running out of environment."
Podesta, now a senior fellow at the
National Resources Defense Council,
gave the 2003 Milton M. Alexander
Memorial Lecture at Temple Beth El
in Bloomfield Township before 350
people on June 13. The program was
co-sponsored by the Michigan
Coalition on the Environment and
Jewish Life (MI-COEJL).
Podesta blamed the "paranoia of oil
executives" for preventing the U.S.
from using "renewable, dependable
and economically viable energy
sources."
"The idea that there is a trade-off
between growing the
economy and pro-
tecting the environ-
ment is a myth,"
said Podesta, claim-
ing 30 years of eco-
nomic growth amid
increasing environ-
mental controls
proves his point.
He covered many
Podesta
predictable topics
such as global warm-
ing, automobiles and
conservation. But it
was his use of Jewish texts that was a
surprise to many.
"I'm a rare bird in D.C. — a seri-
ous, practicing Catholic who brings
my religious background to public
policy," Podesta said. "I wanted to
look at what it means from an ethical
perspective and reach to the right
principles to deal with these current
subjects."
He also argued that America's
reliance on oil "plays a major role in
our Mideast policy and has diverted us
from peace in the Middle East and
support for Israel."
For Betty Schare of Southfield,
Podesta's message was important.
"We need to be reminded more
often because all of us do things that
contribute to the waste of energy
and fuel, and we don't do anything
about it."
