THINK SPRING WITH

ANOTHER FINE annual dinner by
Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute
... with much frivolity.
And the first time that the black-tie
event's cocktail period was held on a
first-floor back lobby at the Renaissance
Center... with the entire affair very well
produced by Roz Cooperman and her
September Moon Productions.
The cocktail hour was elegant in its
Brazilian motif ... with clowns, confetti,
steel band, girls in striking Caribbean
garb, man on stilts, etc.
Dinner was in the "Carnevale" theme
... with Brazilian food for the 850 atten-
dees.
It all began back in 1943 when as the
Detroit Institute of Cancer Research, the
group was incorporated after being
group in a basement laboratory on the
Wayne University Campus.
It grew into the Michigan Cancer
Foundation and began hosting annual
dinners in 1982, with $40,000 raised
the first year.
Today, as Karmanos Cancer Institute,
the 21st dinner raised over $650,000.
Good to see Jaye Cooper again ... the
former Ristorante Di Modesta manager
is now a freelance catering and events
consultant ... and hired by September
Moon to assist at the occasion.
Last time that Frank Ellias wore shoes
was about six or seven years ago ... Only
cowboy boots now ... custom made for
him by Stuart Boot Co. in Arizona
which also makes them for Clint
Eastwood and Robert Wagner ... Frank's
wife, Betty, calls him "My cowboy hus-
band."
If you invite Lilly Camden to your
affair, make sure that her steak is very
well done ... and that her hubby,
Howard, has enough candy in his pock-
et to pass out to folks at the table.
Entertainer Harry Belafonte enjoyed
dinner the evening before ... at Bacco's
on Northwestern ... with brisket of beef
brought for him made by Jaye ... Bacco's
is on the former site of Ristorante Di
Modesta.
JUDGES FOR THE best fruit-pie
cook-off by local food reviewers ... with

Frankenmuth hosting, June 30, 2 p.m.

Haight, the Lark; Dorothy Zender,

made by the reviewers ... Jane Rayburn,
Detroit News, Sylvia Rector, Detroit Free
Press; Ric Bohy, Hour magazine; Ron
Krueger, Flint Jourria4 Scott Wenzel,
