rthur J. Magida is a journal-
ist who has looked deeply
into the soul of Louis
Farrakhan. Now he's done
the same with that of Rabbi Fred
Neulander, who was convicted in
January of killing his wife.
"I think the fundamental thread that
links them is an immense, almost incom-
prehensible sense of grandiosity. They are
both men who deem themselves beyond
the constraints and truth of the faith they
say they espouse," the author of Prophet

Magida's latest book,
The Rabbi and the Hit
Man: A True Tale of
Murder; Passion, and the
Shattered Faith of a
Congregation
(HarperCollins; $24.95),
fills in the story behind the
headlines of the 1994
killing of Carol Neulander,
and the two trials that led
to her husband's convic-
tion.
The book fits into the
genre of true crime, but it is also
thoughtfully anchored in the story of the
American Jewish community and the
changing b role of the rabbi.
The details of this case are not for the
squeamish. This is true evil and savagery
The book begins with a description of
Neulander coming home to find his wife
dead, her blood and guts splattered on
the walls.
He is noticeably calm when the police
and medics arrive, which begins specula-
tions about his involvement in this mur-
der. But many explain his casual manner
as his professionalism, that rabbis often
face tragedy head-on without public
emotion.
In his research, Magida, a longtime
senior editor at the Baltimore Jewish.
Times who now teaches writing at the
University of Baltimore, finds informa-
tion about the rabbi's childhood in
Queens, his embarrassment about his
lower-middle-class family and his early

and well-honed efforts at social climbing.
Marrying Carol, who came from
Woodmere, Long Island, was a step up,
and his decision to go to the Reform
movement's rabbinical school didn't seem
to come as much from spiritual yearn-
ings as from a desire for a steady income
with stature.
Of course none of that is criminal.
Neulander began his rabbinate as a tal-
ented speaker and warm personality par-
ticularly well liked by young people for
his informality and openness to them.
As a young rabbi, he was recruited to
join a Cherry Hill, N.J., synagogue as an
assistant rabbi and soon after was asked
by a small group there to
found a new congrega-
tion.
M'kor Shalom grew
from 150 families in the
1970s to 900 families in
the early 1990s, to
become the largest
Reform congregation in
southern New Jersey "His
charisma and his empathy
were legend," the author
writes.
Magida suggests that
Neulander grew in arro-
gance as he became more
experienced in the rab-
binate, losing sight of the
meaning of the words above the ark in
his synagogue, "Know Before Whom
You Stand." He sunk to lies, inappropri-
ate flirtations, chronic philandering and
murder.
"By the late '70s and early '80s,"
Magida explains, "Fred Neulander essen-
tially stood before himself. He erected a
pillar of self-worship which was essential-
ly constructed of sand, which has all
blown away by now."
In the years before the murder, rumors
about Neulander's marital infidelity were
rampant. During the investigations and
trial, it became evident that more than
once, he got involved with women who
were converting to Judaism under his
tutelage, as well as others.
One woman, Elaine Soncini, was a
well-known local radio host, and the
rabbi told her that he wanted to marry
her, but he also said that he'd lose his
position at the synagogue if he divorced
his wife.
