Dear Readers:

While the focus of our local news gathering is right here
in Oakland County, there is a community barely 45 min-
utes away that has a unique and dispropor-
tionate hold on our minds and even our bod-
ies. That community is Ann Arbor.

The University of Michigan has been the
gravity, drawing our best and brightest chil-
dren as students for many decades. And the
arts, culture and entertainment it spawns have

what the Detroit metropolitan area has to

When the Jewish News staff decided it would begin profil-
ing Jewish life in a nearby community each year, Ann Arbor
was the logical place to begin. After all, the pages of the
Jewish News have covered various aspects of Jewish life at
the University of Michigan and in Ann Arbor for several
years. In recent months, we have significantly expanded this
content. What we continue to find is a vibrant, active and
involved Jewish community whose vitality goes far beyond
the university's physical and psychological boundaries.

Wherever you live in our readership area, we believe you'll
find the following pages provide an informative, interesting
and a fuller snapshot of Jewish life in Ann Arbor. The phys-
ical separation between the Detroit Jewish community and
the Ann Arbor Jewish community is narrowing, as new
housing fills in the empty spaces in Novi, Northville and
other points west. The Jewish News, with this section and its
weekly commitment to expanded coverage of the Ann
Arbor Jewish community, intends to provide content that
benefits both communities, while celebrating the things
that continue to make them separate and distinct.
