Paris, Berlin and London in the
early 1900s and then spread to
Eastern Europe.
As World War II approached, the
tango was one of the most popular
ballroom dances in Europe. Despite
the atrocities that surrounded them,
Jews in the ghettos and concentra-
tion camps adopted the music and
began writing their own Yiddish
tangos, using the songs to document
their experiences.
Today the tango is alive and well
in Europe and around the world
and picking up steam in the United
States, thanks to cultural happen-
ings that include the recent release
of Assassination Tango.
The film stars actor Robert
Duvall, who in real life is a great
advocate of the Argentine tango,
participating in many of the same
workshops and festivals that Burton
attends in Buenos Aires.
It was that movie that sparked
West Bloomfield's Judy Roth, a
member of Temple Israel, to take
lessons.
"As I stepped into Argentine
Tango Detroit, I imagined myself in
a tango club I once came across in
Paris," Roth said, the ambience still
fresh in her mind.
"The studio is lovely. My
boyfriend,and I took a private les-
son, then went to dinner and
returned later in the evening for a
group lesson that was a lot of fun."
The studio offers free introducto-
ry lessons and holds special classes
every Wednesday night at Sangria
restaurant in Royal Oak. Friday
night parties and group lessons are
open to everyone, whether you're
trying the tango for the first time or
have traveled to Buenos Aires to do
the dance.
"The people at Lori's are so
friendly, you don't have to worry
about being awkward. They like
dancing with a beginner," said
Acevedo. "It's a test of how good a
leader one is." rl

From Aug. 19-24, original stars of
the 1980s Broadway hit Tango
Argentine will be conducting work-
shops at Argentine Tango Detroit.
In October, Lori Burton will be tak-
ing a group to Buenos Aires. The
trip is open to the community. For
more information, call Argentine
Tango Detroit at (586) 254-0560
or click on their Web site at
