BROOKDALE THE HERITAGE of S OUTHFIELD Life is full of choices. practical applications of the research. As a result, many of the programs put in place by Dr. Tainsky are a mixture of community outreach, laboratory research and clinical diagnostics research. "About 10 years ago, a good friend of mine was dealing with his son who had Gaucher disease, an inherited, enzyme deficiency disorder affecting Jewish populations of East European ancestry," explains Dr. Tainsky. "The treatment, including using an enzyme that was genetically engineered, cost tens of thousands of dollars. "It occurred to me that parts of the Jewish population were at high risk for several other genetic diseases and their medical expenses for treatment must also be severe. It was around that time that I decided that, should the oppor- tunity present itself, I would direct my research to helping my fellow Jews. "When I was able to focus my thinking on screening for ovarian can- cer, I developed a way to protect high- risk women with a reasonable test which will be adaptable to a standard hospital system so that it can be implemented at low cost." Dr. Tainsky found ovarian cancer to be particularly frustrating because there was no accurate method for early detection for women who found they were at high risk due to BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations. "It took me over a year to just think and Work out a concept for early screening," says Dr. Tainsky. "Fortunately, we were able to obtain the seed money for this research through the Gail Purtan Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. That money paved the way for our original research so that we could apply for and receive large grants for the research project. "The beauty of this particular . con- cept is that it may have the possibility for early screening of other cancers."
