Brown has coached pro or col- lege basketball for half his 62 years. He was voted into bas- ketball's Hall of Fame last year. His career highlights include an NCAA Brown championship at Kansas in 1988 and a berth in the NBA finals with Philadelphia in 2001. A 5'9" point guard at the University of North Carolina, Brown won a gold medal with the U.S. team at the 1961 Maccabiah Games in Israel. He later coached the U.S. Maccabiah. team. Brown will coach the U.S. team in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament this August, and in the 2004 Olympics. He coached the Philadelphia 76ers for the past six seasons. Pistons President Joe Dumars called Brown "one of the elite coaches in the NBA." Brown said coaching the Pistons is "a great opportunity for me ... The future for this team is very promising and I look forward to being part of the success." Brown reportedly received a five-year contract worth at least $25 mil- lion. North Farmington graduate Brad Jaffe concluded a four-year tennis career with Emory University in Atlanta by helping his squad capture the NCAA Division 3 national championship. Jaffe, Michigan's No. 1 singles champion in . 1999, was Emory's cap- tain this year. He was 15-2 at No. 3 singles and also played No. 3 doubles. He won quar- terfinal and final-round Jaffe matches at the eight-team NCAA final; his semi-final round match was halted — with Jaffe leading — when Emory clinched the overall match victo- rY- Jaffe earned All-University Athletic Association first team honors three times in singles and four times in doubles. He owns Emory's highest career singles win- ning percentage, .798. Bloomfield Hills Andover freshman Isaac Kalo won the high school Division 2 state tennis title at No. 2 singles, defeating Country Day's Arvind Nagarajan in the final, 6-3, 7-6. Kalo's singles teammates all reached the semifi- nals: sophomore Howie Migdal at No. 1, soph Jeff Taxe at No. 3 and junior Matt Ran at No. 4, as Andover took third place overall. Andover's No. 2 dou- bles team of junior John Beitner and Steve Lim reached the final, as did the Barons' No. 4 doubles combo of Justin Victor and Joe Hodges. Ann Arbor Pioneer's Jason Hitchcock completed a rare trifecta by playing on three state championship teams in one high school season. Hitchcock and his partner won the Division 1 tennis title at No. 3 doubles in two sets to help Pioneer capture the state Division 1 champi- onship. Hitchcock was also part of Pioneer's championship water polo and swim teams earlier this year. Hitchock, a junior, is on track to earn 12 high school varsity letters. Ann Arbor Huron placed third in Division 1 tennis, with help from its No. 2 doubles team of senior captain Aaron Silver and junior John Goldstein, who reached the semifinals. Also in Division 1 tennis, West Bloomfield's Dan Feldman reached the No. 3 singles finals, where he lost a three- set match. His Laker teammate, David Murav, reached the round of 16 at No. 1 singles. North Farmington's Mike •Kaufinan reached the Division 2 quar- terfinals at No. 1 singles. Boys born in the years 1987-89 can apply for the U.S. junior boys basketball team for the 10th Pan American Maccabi Games. The Games will take place in Santiago, Chile, from Dec. 24, 2003, to Jan. 5, 2004. A training camp will be held in either New York or Florida beginning Dec. 20. The team may be selected by tapes and coaches' recommendations; if enough applications are received, tryouts in Los Angeles and Philadelphia could be held. There will also be basketball teams in the Youth Division (born in the years 1984-86), Open division and Masters (over 40).
