Then, Hanani the cellist was joined by
actress Sigourney Weaver and a per-
cussionist for a specially commissioned
piece by Japanese composer Kenji
Bunch, in which the music and the
reading of a Shakespearean sonnet
formed an integrated whole.
"Close Encounters" also performs in
Scottsdale, Ariz., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,
and Great Barrington, Mass.
Last month, Hanani was in London
to give cello master classes at the Royal
Academy of Music and at the
Guildhall School — but also to visit
his 25-year-old son, Benjamin, who
recently completed a master's degree at
the London School of Economics.
Hanani's wife, Hannah, is a free-
lance journalist who writes about the
arts. When not on the road, the cou-
ple live in New York State. Ll
