"I have 14 very dedicated students [at the conservatory]," he says. Most of these students are in master's or doctoral programs. "I see them on the way to concerts, on the way back from concerts," he adds with a laugh. Close Encounters Hanani, who grew up in a home sur- rounded by music, art and literature, is also founder and artistic director of "Close Encounters With Music," a concert series that combines music with other forms of artistic expression. "With music education being cut almost to nothing, there are professors, doctors, all kinds of professionals out there who know nothing about music," Hanani says. "And here it is perhaps the most profound emotion we have. "We can't teach the way Bernstein taught in his Young People's Concerts — `Here is the resolution; here the domi- nant seventh is useful' — because people won't know what you're talking about. "So we must relate music to other disciplines people are familiar with, such as literature, political events." The series' most recent program took place May 24 at Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony. Titled "Measure for Measure: Shakespeare in Music," the program started with Renaissance, Classical and Romantic-era works.
