/- This Week News Digest Soccer Star Gets Israeli Citizenship Arsonists Hit Jewish Grocery Near Paris Jerusalem/JTA — Israel granted citi- zenship to a foreign player on the Maccabi Petach Tikva soccer team, clearing the way for him to play on Israel's national team. The move could lead the way for Morad Megamedov's participation in an upcoming match against Slovenia this weekend, Israel Radio reported. Interior Minister Avraham Poraz said he was recognizing Megamedov and two other athletes for their contribu- tion to Israel. But Israel's attorney general objected to the move, saying it bypassed rou- tine proceedings. Cabinet Minister Zevulun Orley of the National Religious Party said he would bring the matter before the government because he did not think citizenship decisions should be left to the discre- tion of the interior minister. Paris/JTA — A Jewish grocery store near Paris was gutted in an arson attack. Trash cans and mattresses were set alight and thrown in to the Hyperiol supermarket in Creteil, the largest Jewish community in the Paris suburbs. Police said two youths were arrested later that night and are helping the investigation. Eric Rudolph Hates Jews, Says In-Law New York/JTA — The U.S. white supremacist who was arrested over the weekend as the lead suspect in four bombings, including an attack at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, "hated • Jews more than probably any other race," his former sister-in-law, Deborah Rudolph, told ABC's Good Morning America. Eric Rudolph was arrested in west- ern North Carolina after a five-year search by investigators. Hearing Aid Guide For Observant Deaf New York/JTA — The Orthodox Union has issued a guide for using hearing devices on Jewish holidays. The guidebook addresses permissible ways of using electronic hearing devices on Shabbat and holidays, when it is forbidden to activate electri- cal flow. Written by Rabbi Mordechai Shuchatowitz of Baltimore, an author- ity on Jewish law and the father of deaf children, the guide argues that leniency in specific situations is a mitzvah. The cartoon, which appeared last week, depicts President Bush laying down dollar bills in front of a heavyset man with large nose and Star of David on his jacket. The man, who is meant to be Ariel Sharon, says, "On second thought, the pathway to peace is look- ing a bit brighter." The Tribune's ombudsman, Don Wycliff, said he agrees that the cartoon reinforces anti-Semitic stereotypes.
