Shalom members will honor Rev.
Sammy Semp, the congregation's ritual
director, for his 20 years of service.
The program will begin at 6 p.m. and
will include dinner,
dessert and entertain-
ment.
As ritual director,
Rev. Semp supervises
ritual and religious serv-
ices, conducts the daily
morning and evening
minyan and monthly
Seudah Shilishii, serves

year round as Torah read-
er, reads the Purim Megillah, is the resi-
dent mashgiach, conducts parts of the
High Holiday services and sounds the
shofar.

Alliance Hosts
A Chavurah

This summer, a Hebrew speaking group
will meet Sunday mornings from 10
a.m.-noon and on Tuesday evenings,
7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Max M. Fisher
Federation Building in Bloomfield
Township. The two groups, led by Nira
Lev, will speak, read and study Hebrew
in a chavurah atmosphere under the aus-
pices of Federation's Alliance for Jewish
Education. There is a fee. For informa-

Torah Center
Hosts Scholar

Rabbi Eyal Rav-Noy, director of the
Institute for Jewish Literacy in Los
Angeles, will be the scholar in resi-
dence at a Shabbaton sponsored by
the Sara Tugman Bais Chabad Torah
Center and the Hyman and Sonia
Blumenstein Outreach Institute
from May 30-June 1.
The theme of the weekend will
be "Who Really Wrote the Bible?"
The public is invited to the Sunday
brunch and lecture on "The Secret
Code of the Torah: Deciphering
Hidden Fingerprints" at the Torah
Center from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Shabbat accommodations can be
arranged to attend Shabbat pro-
grams if you live outside walking

B'nai Moshe
Marks Shavuot

Shavuot will be celebrated at
Congregation B'nai Moshe with tradi-
tional services and special events open
to the community.
There will be a 6 p.m. service on
Thursday, June 5, followed by an
Israeli-style buffet dinner at 6:45 p.m.
for which there is a charge (prepaid
reservations required).
A free drop-in Tikkun Leil Shavuot
(Torah study session in honor of the
first night of Shavuot) will be from
7:30-9 p.m. led by Rabbi Elliot Pachter
on "Receiving the Torah in 5763."
At 9 a.m. Friday, June 6, the first
morning of Shavuot, Megillat Ruth, the
Book of Ruth, will be chanted.
On the second morning of Shavuot,
which is also Shabbat, 9.a.m. services
will include Yizkor. Thee will be a study
group with Barry Levine during the
Torah service and later the installation
of officers and board. Outgoing
President Larry Gunsberg will hand the
gavel to incoming President Dennis
Deutsch. Both are direct descendants of
the original Gunsberg brothers who
founded the congregation 90-plus years
ago and named it in honor of their
father, Moses Gunsberg.
