Writuality Cover Story LIGHTS OF PEACE from page 53 turn the physical light of Shabbat into spiritual light," Greenberg said. "We could talk about politics, but we believe spiritual power has an effect and we want to do what we can spiritually to help Israel. "Lighting Shabbat candles always warrants a time of personal prayer. It allows us to take a minute or two to get rid of all that happened dur- ing the week and enter the peace of Shabbat," Greenberg said. "Shabbat is always a special time to pray to God," Amzalak said. "I always have my family in mind when I light Shabbat candles, but on May 30, I will take the extra time to join all the women and girls who will pray together for peace in Israel." ❑ Life is full of choices. The lighted candles pro- vide the atmosphere of shalom bayit (harmony in the home) and the light and gladness that Shabbat brings. After lighting the candles, the hands are drawn inward in a circu- lar motion three times to indicate the beckoning and acceptance of Shabbat. With hands placed over the eyes, the blessing is recited over the candles: "Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His command- ments and commanded us to kin- dle the light of the holy Shabbat." After the blessing, personal prayers. may be added.
