Federal Funding JARC wins federal grant to provide clients with mental health support service. .S. Rep. Joseph Knollenberg, R-Bloomfield Hills, announced the first federal grant funding for JARC, a nonprofit organization that serves people with disabilities and their families. Knollenberg made the announce- ment on May 18 at the dedication cer- emony of JARC's newest group home, the Jack and Evelyn Schreier Home in Farmington Hills, one of 20 such facilities owned and operated by JARC in Oakland County. The $500,000 grant will be used to provide mental health support services and long-term case management for unserved and under- served adults with developmental dis- abilities who, without support, are at high risk of exploitation, homelessness, hospi- talization, encounters Keller with law enforcement and even jail. JARC provides group homes and independent living services, case man- agement and skill training for adults, along with respite care and advocacy for families with children with any disability. Knollenberg and JARC Executive Director Joyce Keller had many discussions about the needs of people with disabili- ties. "She's helped me learn about people at Knollenberg risk because they have little or no public funding for what they need," he said. "When our government helps an organization like JARC, they're in real- ity helping the entire community." Recently, as Michigan's economy has floundered, funding for many individ- uals with developmental disabilities has been reduced or eliminated. Without this critical federal funding, continued services to those served by JARC in this population would be in serious jeopardy. "It's heartening to see our govern- ment place a high priority on the criti- cal issue of people with developmental disabilities," Keller said. JARC, based in Farmington Hills, provides group homes and independ- ent living services, case management and skill training for adults, plus respite care and advocacy for families with children with any disability. ❑ tWg by the shop anytime before camp or use coupon code 'Pretty' at Moosejaw.com Expires 7M/200$ it stock items only excludes kayaks 322 N.
