Jerusaletn/JTA — An Israeli Cabinet
minister unveiled a peace plan
Wednesday that offers the Palestinians
a state in Jordan.
Tourism Minister Benny Elon of the
far-right National Union bloc held a
news conference in the Knesset to pro-
pose that the international community
provide economic assistance for the
limited resettlement of Palestinian
refugees in Jordan, where the majority
of the population already is
Palestinian. Israel would maintain sov-
ereignty over the West Bank and the
Gaza Strip. Palestinians who live there
would have the status of Jordanian cit-
izens residing in Israel.

...and because you do, we
prevent children with one Jewish par-
ent and one Palestinian parent from
receiving automatic citizenship. Leftist
politicians and human rights organiza-
tions criticized the recommended
amendment to Israel's Citizenship Law.
Backed by both Attorney General
Elyakim Rubinstein and Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon, the initiative
comes in response to a suicide bomb-
ing last year that was carried out by a
man with a Jewish mother and a
Palestinian father. The man's citizen-
ship made it easier for him to carry
out the bombing.
