Historians Honor
Matilda Brandwine

Matilda "Tillie" Brandwine started
on a personal mission in 1991 to
found a statewide-computerized
Jewish cemetery index.
In recognition of this and of her
many volunteer contributions to
the Detroit Jewish community, the
Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan has named Brandwine
recipient of its 2003 Leonard N.
Simons Award for the Preservation
and Dissemination of Michigan
Jewish History.
Brandwine, of
Bingham Farms,
will be honored at
the annual meeting
of the society on
June 29 at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
The Irwin I.
Cohen Cemetery
Brandwine
Index, named in
memory of the late
Jewish communal leader, has grown
into a much-used resource under
the sponsorship of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's Leonard N. Simons Jewish
Community Archives. The index
lists 64,000 Jews who have died
since the mid-1800s and are buried
at 36 cemeteries in Michigan.
The Jewish Historical Society
annual meeting will be 10:45 a.m.
Sunday, June 29, at Adat Shalom.
There is a charge for the luncheon
to follow. For information, call
Adele Staller, (248) 557-8315, or
Jim Grey, (2487) 540-9070. To
