today for a safe and secure nation.
Gottlieb returned to the United States
to live and work in several cities, and he
relates an amusing stint as a shoe sales-
man. He went back to Israel and experi-
enced a failed early marriage before
returning stateside to attend Wayne State
University, where he got active in politics
as a Democrat.
He obtained a doctorate in behavioral
sciences from the University of Chicago,
and spent several years counseling disad-
vantaged youngsters.
Gottlieb had a 25-year academic career
that included positions at Harvard,
Dartmouth, Michigan State and Penn
State universities — an amazing feat in
light of his early educational problems.
He served as a consultant for the U.S.
Departments of Labor and Education,
for the Office of Economic
Opportunity, and on energy as a mem-
ber of President Kennedy's Council of
Science Advisors.
In Texas, Gottlieb spent seven years as
dean of the College of Social Sciences at
the University of Houston. The author
— who played the
piano as a youth —
also served for seven
years as president
and CEO for the
Center for the
Performing Arts in
the Woodlands, a
Houston suburb.
"I have a passion
for education that I
hope has helped pave
the way for thousands of children to be
exposed to the arts," he said.
When Gottlieb visited his parents to
explain he was going to graduate school
to work on a doctoral degree, his mother
asked him what kind of a doctor he
would become. He tried to explain the
difference between a medical doctor and
a doctor of philosophy.
"They knew it had to be good,
because I was going to a university and
I would become a doctor," he said.
"My mother composed herself, took
my hand and said, 'Finally, a mensch.'
"I thought to myself, Perhaps almost
a mensch, but not quite."' ❑

David Gottlieb will speak at the
annual meeting of the Detroit
chapter of the David Horodoker
Women's Organization 7 p.m.
Wednesday, May 28, at Tam
O'Shanter Country Club in West
Bloomfield, where he also will
sign copies of his book. For reser-
vations, call Norma Gorosh,
(248) 855-6955.
