Teachers To Learn
Hebrew In Israel
Ulpan Akiva will offer the course
Shachaf— Hebrew for Hebrew teachers
— July 21-Aug. 13 in Israel. A dona-
tion will fund this project to teach the
teaching of Hebrew as a foreign lan-
guage.
Local Hebrew teacher Nira Lev rec-
ommends Ulpan Akiva.
'As an educator involved for many
years with training Jewish teachers who
teach Hebrew and prayer in Jewish
schools," she said, "I am very familiar
with the frustration of non-native,
American-born Hebrew teachers who
are outstanding teachers but struggle
with the Hebrew language and feel
uncomfortable teaching prayer and
Hebrew without having a good com-
mand of the Hebrew language.
"Many times we tried to plan Hebrew
courses for non-native teachers but
because of the difficulty in scheduling,
we could not make it a reality. My
dream was to be able to send teachers to
Israel in the summer, when there is no
school, to get a chance to have an inten:-
sive course of Hebrew and learn how to
teach it to American students."
Ulpan Akiva teaches the Hebrew lan-
guage and Israeli culture and tradition
in a setting on the sea in Netanya.
Students come from around the world.
They enroll in 3-week sessions and are
immersed in Hebrew language instruc-
tion blended with lectures about Israeli
culture and holidays, Israeli song and
dance, and field trips to museums, con-
certs and points of interest throughout
Israel. Students live on campus.
"Ulpan Akiva offers a remarkable
opportunity to bring Am Yi srael (the
nation of Israel) together in a way that
is not possible anywhere else," said staff
member Mark Milgrom, who cites the
school's "ability to teach anybody to
confidently speak and understand con-
versational Hebrew"
Scholarships are limited and will be
made available on a first-come, first-
served basis.
The scholarship includes tuition,
