an important role in helping young
victims of violence — on both sides
— over the past couple years.
"Too many children have lost
limbs or had spinal war injuries,"
Balkin says. "They have to be taught
a completely different way of life."
And at Alyn, patients are made to
feel as whole as possible, he adds.
Amazing Treatments
Nancy Winer of West Bloomfield,
event co-chair with Gail Elkus of
Huntington Woods, doesn't shy
away from using words like "miracu-
lous" and "amazing" when describ-
ing what happens to children treat-
ed at Alyn Hospital.
"There's not another hospital like
it in the world, and certainly not in
the Middle East," Winer says.
She tells stories of patients who
have come to the hospital in a coma
with no use of muscles and later
"are walking, talking and using
computers.
Winer also credits the multi-disci-
plinary approach of the hospital for
its success. "It has biochemical engi-
neers, surgeons, psychologists, and
speech therapists all in one place,"
she says, adding, that the people
there "give their hearts" to their
work.
Honorary chairpersons of the din-
ner are Penny and Harold
Blumenstein of Bloomfield Hills
and Judy and Mark Goldsmith of
Huntington Woods.
And great-niece of Alyn's origina-
tor, Dr. Keller, Paula Glazier is past
president of Detroit's Friends of
Alyn Hospital, and along with
another Detroit past president Pam
Lippitt of Southfield, is a current
member of the national board of the
American Friends of Alyn Hospital
in New York City.
"We honor the children," honoree
Debbie Balkin says about this event.
"It's thrilling to see that they get
what they need at Alyn Hospital to
lead productive lives." ❑
