hen this year's Michigan
Association of Homes and
Services for the Aging
(MAHSA) awardees were announced, .
two were women who live in Jewish
Apartments and Services facilities.
Eva Sadoff, a resident of the Norma
Jean and Edward Meer Jewish
Apartments, and Ella Baker of the
Lillian and Samuel Hechtrnan Jewish
Apartments were honored for extraordi-
nary service through volunteer efforts at
an April 30 recognition
luncheon and awards cere-
mony in Lansing.
"Both women have been
involved in community
service work as well as vol-
unteering at their own

apartments," said Esther
Winer, JAS community out-
reach coordinator who was

Sadoff b and Baker for the
award. Her nomination of
Sadoff was a team effort

with colleague Stacey
Silverstein. Winer nominated
Baker along with co-workers Sandra
Smith and Carol Diskin.
Sadoff's volunteer efforts, which
include assisting with field trips and pro-
grams, are highlighted by her position as
chairperson of the Meer welcoming
committee. "She personally welcomed
almost 200 new residents," Winer said.
"She escorts new residents to dinner
when they first arrive so they will not
have to eat alone."
Baker's volunteer work includes an
unusual daily task. "She assists with the
care of the Hechtman mascot,
Queenie," Winer said. "She also shares
her talents as a master gardener by plant-
ing over 400 plants behind her residence
each year and she shops for other resi-
dents who are unable to drive themselves
and is always lending a hand to others."
Winners of the MAHSA award were
selected based on the type of volunteer
services they performed, the frequency
of their commitment and their enhance-
ment of service and quality at the facility
as a result of their efforts.
