MISSION from page 17
Remembrance) and Yom HaAtzmaut
(Israel's Independence Day).
"We will fill up hotels, we will fill
up shops and for 10 days we will do
everything we can to help overcome all
the terrible things that are oroina b on in
Israel," Dr. Krugel said.
Rabbi Elliot Pachter is confident
congregants at B'nai Moshe will be
encouraged by the Shabbat talk by Dr.
Krugel. "The last mission in 1999, we
split a bus with Beth Shalom," he said.
We hope to have our own bus this
time."
New this year are expanded oppor-
tunities to volunteer at soup kitchens,
help refurbish living places damaged
by terrorism, work on an activity like
art with seniors, teach teenage girls
how to care for themselves, visit nurs-
ing homes and hospitals, and lead
youth sports clinics.
Alter, who will address the congrega-
tion at Shaarey Zedek Southfield
hopes that this Mission Shabbat will
underscore the message that we are
now at a time when not only does
Israel needs us, but we need Israel. We
need to be there, for reasons impor-
tant to Israel and for our own sense of
comfort and completeness," he said.
"Every time I give a sermon about
going to Israel, 10 people come up to
me to talk about going," said Rabbi
Yedwab, who will attend the mission,
along with colleague Rabbi Harold
Loss. "I think a lot of people have a
pent-up desire about going, and hear-
ing about it in synagogue helps. For
some, the comfort of going with their
own rabbi is enough to help them
decide to go," Rabbi Yedwab said.
This is a united effort to make our
presence felt in Israel," said Rabbi
Joseph Krakoff of Shaarey Zedek
where promotion of the mission, in
which he will participate, has preceded
the prayer for Israel during Shabbat
services for many months. "We are
behind this trip 1,000 percent and we
want to do everything we can to put
our arms around as many people as
possible and tell them: We need to go
to Israel together."
