ing ... it was health and its teachings
... So when the opportunity came to
enjoy both ... he leaped at the chance.
Raju gives ice away in the winter-
time ... Summer, spring and fall, too ...
in various special promotions for his
"Water to Go" operation on 123 N.
Commerce in Commerce Township.,
Last April, Raju opened selling
drinking water for 45 cents a gallon ...
which he still does ... always pure and
fresh ... Ordinary tap water is amaz-
ingly purified in a 12-stage purifica-
tion system by intricate machinery at
his store.
People can bring in their own con-
tainers or buy one of the reusable ones
Raju has on hand ... any size to fit
almost all needs ... The first one-gallon
fill-up is without charge.
Those plastic bottles of his are all
made of polycarbonate, a material of
plastic base, not oil base ... Oil base
bottles have a seepage that gives the
water a peculiar taste.
The ice from purified water is only 99
cents for an 8-ounce bag ... (except
when he gives it away on those promos.)
Actually, Raju's "Water to Go" store is
his introduction into being a health
headquarters for folks ... open Monday,
Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
... Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
There's even purified water and con-
tainers for pets. Raju is so hooked on
his water that he drinks 64-ounces a
day himself.
REMEMBER WHEN Dept. ... The
time was in the early 1950s after World
War II when Steve Zieman's father, Joe
Zieman, and Uncle Hy Zieman, owned
Whitey's Delicatessen on W. Six Mile
and Santa Barbara in Detroit.
"While big- and small-time movers
and shakers would congregate there
daily to sup and shmooze," writes
Steve, he best remembers the endle'ss
barrels of homemade pickles that filled
the backroom "And when the back-
rooms weren't big enough, the barrels
were stacked out into the alley."
"To this day," he says, "a top-quality
kosher dill is like getting a letter from
home.
(Thanks to Steve for the "million-
dollar bill" ... Problem is people think-
ing I'm going nuts when I ask them to
cash it for me ... Wonder if I'd have
any trouble with the "six-dollar bill"
