"Everybody told me I needed to be
based in New York, and I arrived in
Manhattan nvo years ago," Friedman
says. "Through a family friend, I met
a teacher and opera star, Diana
Soviero, who has changed my whole
"wprld. She got me grounded."
Friedman, who has interned at the
Hawaii Opera Theatre, has performed
Barbarina in its production of The
Marriage of Figaro. She also was cast in
the operas Little Women, Macbeth and
The Merry Widow for the Young Artist
Program at Chautauqua Opera Theatre
in New York state, where she met Everly.
"I'm really not set on opera,"
Friedman says. "I just love to sing. My
family is mixed [ethnically] , but both
sides love music. We had family sing-
alongs, and my dad had us singing
Jewish songs."
In addition to celebrating the Jewish
holidays, Friedman enjoys participat-
ing in holidays from other religions as
well. Her mother, Jill, is from
Singapore with a Buddhist and
Christian background. Her brother,
John, eight years younger, chose to
have a bar mitzvah.
"My cousin Allen Leider is a cantor
in Virginia, and that's the closest rela-
tive I have with music as a profession,"
the diva says.
Friedman's family — mom, dad and
brother — will be in town for her
Detroit debut and a reunion. There will
be a dinner -with relatives and friends,
including paternal aunt and uncle
Elissa and Hal Leider of Walled Lake.
Elissa Leider has seen her niece per-
form at Chautauqua and is looking
forward to the "Divas" show and see-
ing family, especially brother Sanford.
He moved to Hawaii after graduating
from the University of Michigan and
now does computer instruction for the
University of Phoenix.
"I'm doing a lot of auditioning in
New York," says the vocalist, who has
worked as a cosmetics consultant to
support her singing career.
"I'm also getting ready for another
summer at Chautauqua and upcoming
shows in Hawaii toward the end of the
year, when I will sing with the sym-
phony, a chamber group and a troupe
presenting The Merry Widow." II
