Roiphe, also a magazine writer and columnist for The Jerusalem Report, has followed ORT's schools and activi- ties for many years. A close friend of hers was head of the organization in the area where she lives. "I think ORT is well worthy of our support," Roiphe says. The author, whose novels often address issues of family problems and the feminist movement and bring her personal life into the mix, says she always has been interested in theater. The play came about after a director friend requested projects to bring to the stage. "I've always written dialogue into my books," says Roiphe, who has been on the board of the American Jewish World Service. "I have written about political and social issues, and my idea is to be a commentator on what hap- , pens to human beings. "I've looked at the world through Jewish eyes always. At the times when I may not directly be writing on a Jewish theme — although I most often am — it's the basic building block of what I do." Roiphe, a former columnist for The New York Observer, has a new novel, Secrets of the City, coming out in October.
