Israel Celebrates
Independence

3,500 per month

Jerusalem/JTA — Heavy security was
in place as Israelis celebrated the coun-
try's 55th Independence Day.
"If only I could truly stand here this
evening, at the beginning of our
Independence Day, and make a prom-
ise to all of us that everything will be
fine; that the longed-for peace is just
outside our walls and that tomorrow a
new promising dawn will break
through the skies of this wounded and
bleeding land," Knesset speaker
Reuven Rivlin said at the torch-light-
ing ceremony that kicked off the cele-
brations Tuesday night.
"Instead we can, all of us, look reali-
ty in the eyes, and promise ourselves
and our children, that as always, as we
have done throughout the past 55
years, even if sometimes we must grit
our teeth, together we shall continue
to dream and to try to make it hap-
pen; together we shall continue to
hope and to build; and together we
shall wave the flag.
Palestinians fired mortars at a Gaza
Strip settlement Tuesday night. No one
was hurt in the attack on Neveh
Dekalim, but one shell landed near cel-
ebrants and damaged a building, Israel
Radio reported. Residents were ordered
by the army to enter safe rooms.

Operates Worldwide

New York/JTA — Hezbollah has ter-
ror cells operating in at least 20 coun-
tries, according to a new report. Some
of these cells operate in the United
States and Europe, according to the
report by the American Jewish
Committee. The report is the fourth
in a series of studies on terrorist
groups conducted by the
AJCommittee.

ADL: Hate
Groups Uniting

Phoenix/JTA — Anti-immigration
groups along the U.S.-Mexico border
have links with white supremacist
groups, according to the Anti-
Defamation League. Individuals
opposed to immigration are linking
with supremacist groups at rallies and
at border patrols to promote hatred
and intolerance, the group says.
"The Arizona border has become

the flashpoint for America's far-right
anti-immigration movement," said Bill
Straus, a regional director for the ADL
in Arizona.

Israel Documents
Found In Iraq

Jerusalem/JTA — U.S. soldiers found
documents and maps relating to Israel
during a search for an ancient Jewish
text in Iraq. The soldiers, members of
a mobile team that has been searching
for banned weapons in Iraq, found
maps Tuesday that indicated where
Iraq thought Scud missiles had landed
during the 1991 Gulf War.
In the former secret police head-
quarters in Baghdad, the team also
found lists of terrorist attacks in Israel
and mock-ups of the Knesset and
downtown Jerusalem, as well as satel-
lite photographs of Israel's nuclear
complex in Dimona. The team, on a
special assignment, failed to locate a
seventh-century copy of the Talmud
that a former member of Saddam
Hussein's secret police had said was
located in the building.

Hillel To Appoint
Interim Director

New York/JTA — Avraham Infeld is
expected to be appointed interim -
director of Hillel: The
Foundation for Jewish Campus Life.
Sources told JTA that Infeld, an Israeli
who headed the Melitz educational
organization and who has been a consult-
ant to Hillel, could be approved as inter-
im director as early as later this week.
The search for a successor to
Richard Joel has run into difficulties.
The group's top choice, an Ivy
League-educated, 30-something
Bostonian who did not come from the
Jewish professional world, turned
down the post, and two other candi-
dates dropped out of the running.
Joel will assume the presidency of
Yeshiva University in June.

University of California at Berkeley's
Center for Middle Eastern Studies

campus Jewish newspaper.
