JAMD Unveils
Challenge Grant

Look for Alexis P. Rubin's "This
Month in Jewish History" for
May.
www.detroitjewishnews.com

T

he Jewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit
announced the opening of a chal-
lenge grant from the Eis
Philanthropic Fund of the United
Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan
Detroit. The fund will match all
contributions made to JAMD
between May 1 and June 30, up to
a total of $100,000.
The fund was created by the
estate of Alice Eis, an Austrian Jew
who left Vienna after Kristallnacht
and spent World War II as a refugee
in Shanghai, China. Es, who lived
in Detroit, recently died at age 97.
Widowed and without children or
other family, she left her estate to
charitable causes.
"Mrs. Eis was pleased to know
how she could support Jewish organ-
izations, particularly the Academy,
which would help Jewish children
establish their Jewish identities," said
Robert E. Kass, her attorney.
Those wishing to participate may
send donations to JAMD, 6600 W.
Maple, West Bloomfield, MI
48322, attention Matt Berg.

) New Column from
Micah D. Halpern:
It's About Perception

Will the Israelis and Palestinians
ever reach a peace agreement?
It's all about attitude, says
Micah Halpern. And percep-
tions. That's why previous
efforts have failed. Does the
road Map even have a chance?
micah explains.

DREAM COME TRUE from page 89
from among the unaffiliated young
people in the community," Aronson
said. "That's how the school can con-
tinue to fulfill its mission."
JAMD parent Mindy Socloff of Ann
Arbor said she's very happy with the
school, "happy enough that I'm will-
ing to carpool."
"I hope they succeed and grow, that
they have enough teachers to have role
models in all walks of Jewish life," said
Socloff, whose younger son attends
Southfield's Yeshivat Akiva. "The
Orthodox community has to be able
to feel that JAMD is a place that takes
them and their beliefs seriously."
Milken Community High School in
suburban Los Angeles has one prob-
lem JAMD can only dream of. The
largest non-Orthodox Jewish day high
school in the United States, Milken is
graduating 119 seniors this year.
"When you get so large, some of
your initial goals have to be recast,"
said Dr. Rennie Wrubel, Milken head
of school. "And, once you become a
respected school, one of your greatest
challenges is, people are vying to get
in. And saying 'no' to a Jewish child is
very difficult." 1-1

) New Column from
Brian Blum:
Why I Run

For columnist Brian Blum, run-
ning is more than just physical
exercise. It's a way for connect-
ing with the land itself. On the
week of Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel
Independence Day, Brian
explains. why running helps him
to better know his homeland.
