Berkley's varsity baseball team
includes a quartet of starting Jewish
seniors. First baseman/pitcher Evan
Kardon is batting .406. He has one
pitching victory and a 4.50 earned
run average. Pitcher/outfielder
Zachary Schwartz is the Bears' num-
ber one hurler. He owns one win,
while his 5.06 ERA is misleading
because he pitches against Berkley's
toughest opponents. Pitcher/infielder
Cary Sternberg boasts a 0.86 ERA,
while catcher Geoff Kaplan is hitting
.364.
Steven Weingarden is coaching
Berkley's varsity tennis team for the
fourth year. His squad began the sea-
son 5-0-1, 3-0-1 in OAA Division 2,
and is ranked 10th in the state's
Division 2. The squad includes senior
Robert White, who plays No. 4 sin-
ales 3 freshman Matt Weitzman at No.
b
2 doubles, freshman Andrew White
at No. 3 doubles, plus the No. 4 dou-
bles team of sophomores Michael
Coden and Bobby Siporin.
The JCC's Kenny Goldman winter
basketball league concluded its season
with three championship contests on
April 13. The Rockets beat the
Celtics to win the second-third-grade
division. For the second year in a
row, the Sonics, who began the regu-
lar season with nine straight losses,
beat the Bulls in the fourth-fifth-
grade final.
In the sixth-seventh-grade title
contest, the Pythons won their sec-
ond straight championship, beating
the Wolverines. The six-week
Kenny Goldman spring season
begins May 4.
Platinum Play won the regular sea-
son and playoff championship of the
JCC InLine Hockey Center's Silver
division. Platinum Play was 11-0-1 in
the regular season. They defeated
Stampede 8-6 in the final. The team
was led by Geoff Cary, who had 35
goals and 24 assists, plus goaltender
Kyle Bronsteen, who was 9-0-1 with
a 4.60 goals-against average. The
IHC includes Jewish and non-Jewish
players.
Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook swim-
mer Gabe Schubiner capped an out-
standing freshman season by earning
first team All-County and All-Area
recognition in the 100 backstroke. ❑
