Q: I'm told there's a Jewish angle
to everything, especially in medi-
cine. So what's Jewish about appen-
dicitis?
A: The first physician to success-
fully diagnose and remove a rup-
tured appendix was Simon Baruch
(1840-1921).
A native of Posen, Prussia (today,
Poznan, Poland), Baruch immigrat-
ed to America in 1855. He settled
in South Carolina, earned his med-
ical degree in 1862, and for three
years served as a surgeon in the
Confederate Army. After the Civil
War, he resided in New York City.
He was the father of renowned fin-
ancier and presidential adviser
Bernard M. Baruch (1870 1965). ❑
