Impressive Youth Volunteer As one of four Young Metro Volunteer awardees, Perry Teicher has already accumulated an impressive list of vol- unteer achievements and firsts. He won a BBYO national award for the weekly basketball program he estab- lished with mentally challenged adults through JARC, a social service agency. Last year, he won the election as BBYO's Michigan regional president. Richard Segal, BBYO regional chair, wrote in his nominating letter that Teicher extended his volunteer activi- ties and heart at the local, statewide, national and now international level. Twice Teicher has traveled to Bulgaria with other BBYO leaders to teach Jewish history and customs to Jewish youth who had little understanding of their heritage. At home, to foster understanding between Jewish and Arab youth, Teicher entered the American Arab and Jewish Friends essay contest, in which he, another Jewish youth and two Arab teens met, ate meals at each others' homes, attended religious services and wrote a paper together on the experi- ence. Each member of this group won a college scholarship in the contest. "One main thing about volunteer- ing," Teicher said, "is that people should enjoy_the volunteer work they do. It'll make as much an impact on the people you're helping as on your- self."
