PLUMBING TIPS BASEMENT FLOODING? Spring storms bring power Golden Hearts SHARON HART AND PERRY TEICHER TO RECEIVE UNITED WAY AWARDS. SHARON LUCKERMAN Staff Writer T wo of the 14 volunteers to be honored with United Way Community Services' prestigious volunteer awards began their volunteer "educations" at the same place: B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO), the largest Jewish youth group in the world. Sharon Hart, presi- dent of the Jewish Community Center, and Perry Teicher, 18, BBYO Michigan regional president and a senior at West Bloomfield High School, will be among those honored Hart at the United Way Community Services' volunteer luncheon Monday, April 28, at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center. More than 1,200 people will attend the event that coincides with National Volunteer Week (April 27-May 3). Both Hart and Teicher are members Perry of Adat Shalom Synagogue and live in West Bloomfield. Hart will receive one of six Heart of Gold awards, "one of the highest vol- unteer recognition awards one can receive," said Virgil H. Carr, president and CEO of United Way Community Services. "These honorees represent the thousands of volunteers throughout southeastern Michigan who give unselfishly to benefit the lives of oth- ers." "Hart's the kind of volunteer every professional wants to work with," said Harlene Appelman, director of Federation's Alliance for Jewish Education, who wrote a support letter for Hart. "Sharon is bright, funny and cares deeply about what she's doing. She's willing to roll up her sleeves and do the hard work, and she manages to motivate professionals because you want to go the extra mile with her." For 40-50 hours a week for two years, Hart has worked as JCC presi- dent. She's also held leadership posi- tions in Women's American ORT-Michigan Region, Yad Ezra and in the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's community out- reach and education pro- grams. Yet, with all her work in so many different areas, Hart has never lost sight of the importance of another kind of leader. "I saw Sharon at the beginning of her involve- ment at Adat Shalom," said Rabbi Efry Spectre, rabbi emeritus of Adat Shalom, who knew Hart when she was president of his congre- gation. "One thing about her, she's a friend of rabbis. She understands the mission of Judaism and the place of rabbis in furthering that mission. At times, not everybody can see that pic- ture, but Sharon can." When asked why she spends so many hours volun- teering, Hart said, "I found that I felt very fulfilled in the volunteer force. I was continually learning and it afford- ed new opportunities and new relation- ships. And I liked being able to influ- ence people in what they would assume is a positive way." With her presidency ending this year, Hart hopes to have an opportunity for more Judaic learning, which doesn't mean she will stop volunteering. "I like challenges and the opportunity to initi- ate new programs and experiences — just doing exactly what I've been doing. I find it extraordinarily fulfilling."
