is a bit like the Star in Southfield.
"Second place winner of a sliced
bagel chip was Farfellina Foods of
Memphis, Tenn., who wore a house-
coat made out of truck tire threads
and large nails. Bringing up the rear
former Phi Sigma Sigma pledge chair-
man from U. of M., Bunny Kolkos,
resplendent in a housecoat made out
of vacuum bags, was last heard mut-
tering, "I come all the way from
Detroit and win third prize, a rubber
band holder.'
"Next year's contest will be in the
food court of the Diplomat Mall on
Sept. 22, 2004. Promises to enrich the
prize pot are rumored."
But Stan is serious as he writes,
"The late Rabbi M. Robert Syme
always wore the mantle of God like a
silk glove. He brought my three chil-
dren through their childhood to adult-
hood. I remember him when I was a
kid at Camp Tamarack and his kind-
ness and understanding and devotion
to Judaism will glow far brighter than
anything I can say here.
"Rabbis Jacob Segal, Leon Fram,
Morris Adler and other mentors can
move over to admit another.
"Finally Detroit, we are sending you
back your snowbirds. We have fed and
clothed them (Joe's and
Bloomingdale's), pampered them with
massages and mineral baths (Boca
Raton Spa and Country Club), enter-
tained them with losing sports teams
(Panthers, Dolphins, Marlins) and
given them places to go to entertain
themselves (City Place, WPB;
Morikami Museum, Delray Beach; the
Boys Market, Delray Beach,; the
Diplomat, Hollywood; Cheeseburger,
Naples; South Beach and thousands
more). I have this feeling that they will
all be back again because a winter in
Florida keeps you young."
TOUGH AND MIGHTY expensive
way to finally be able to take off work ...
But George Golematis, bossman at
Giorgio's in Sugar Tree, and Cholada
Chan, head gal at Shangri-La in Orchard
Mall, both on Orchard Lake Road in
West Bloomfield, had little choice.
They were among the victims of the
snow and sleet storms that recently
closed so many restaurants because of
power outages ... and were finally
forced into the "vacation" by Mother
Nature.
10 YEARS AGO, Eric Briggeman
began brewing beer in his garage as a
hobby ... Five years ago he was hired to
work for Big Buck Brewery &
Steakhouse in Auburn Hills ... Today,
Eric is Big Buck's chief brewmaster, last
