services together.
The Beit Midrash program will add
one hour to the Beth Achim tradition
for a total of seven classroom hours per
week, with classes Mondays, Wednesday
and Sundays. This curriculum includes
more comprehensive training in mod-
em Hebrew and more exposure to pri-
mary Torah text, while maintaining a
family contact component.
The two tracks will be in entirely dif-
ferent classrooms for their Glasswork,
Berg said. On Sundays, they'll come
together for music, tefillah (prayer) and
special programs.
Adat Shalom will not be hiring any
new teachers, but will retain its current
staff; she said.
The curriculum for K-2 classes is
essentially unchanged, Berg said. The
school has been a pioneer in early child-
hood Hebrew immersion (the use of
Hebrew-only teaching for part of the
session), and Hebrew immersion will be
an integral part of the three-day-a-week
program for the older students.

Two Days A Week

Adat Shalom member Andy Goldberg
of West Bloomfield, a graduate of the

synagogue's religious school, has high
hopes for the two-day-a-week option.
"The way it's designed, it will actual-
ly encourage a family experience," said
Goldberg, whose children will be in
third grade and kindergarten next year.
"Thirty years ago, when I went to reli-
gious school, things were done more by
rote," he said. "Now, I read the prayers,
but I don't really understand what I'm
reading.
"This will give me the opportunity
to learn with my children."
Sandy Colvin of West Bloomfield
said, "I'm really glad this school is going
to offer an option. It will help a lot of
people, but for those like me who are
already in the program, it'll be a lot easi-
er to stick with the schedule as it is. I
think the decision to go to a two-day
system depends on how old your chil-
dren are."
Colvin, whose daughter has only two
more years in Adat Shalom's religious
school, said she had approached the
synagogue several years ago, asking for a
Tuesday school because so many of her
children's friends were going on
Tuesdays and Thursdays to other reli-
gious schools.
"Probably they'll have to tweak the
program," she said. II
