SPECIALISTS IN
CUSTOM GLASS PRODUCTS:

For two Sundays, Ken Goss of West
Bloomfield brought his delivery truck
from work and completely loaded it
with used books donated by people in
the community.
Shirley Levine of West Bloomfield
contributed more than 200 boxes of
books, while 40 students from the
Jewish Academy of Metropolitan
Detroit (JAMD) and North
Farmington, West Bloomfield and
Birmingham's Groves high schools
loaded and unloaded the truck in prepa-
ration for the three-day T.H.E. Friends
of Literacy Used Book Sale May 18-21
at Laurel Park Place in Livonia.
When the popular 40-year-old
Brandeis used book sale ended more
than a year ago, Roz Blanck of West
Bloomfield spearheaded a revival after
reading about its demise.
She rounded up many of the women
in the Brandeis University National
Women's Committee, Detroit Chapter,
and asked them to serve as mentors to
the new sponsors.
To sponsor "T.H.E. Friends" used
book sale, Blanck tapped the Jewish
Community Council's Detroit Jewish
Coalition for Literacy, Hillel Day School
of Metropolitan Detroit, the JAMD, the
Jewish News and Schostak Brothers &
Company. All proceeds from the sale

will aid children's literacy and education,
she said.
"We have over 15,000 books and
need over 30,000," says Blanck.
Drop-off boxes can be filled with
books, records, CDs and tapes through
May 1. Drop-off sites include the
JCCouncil, 6735 Telegraph, Bloomfield
Township: 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m. weekdays;
the Jewish Community Center in Oak
Park: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays and 6-
7:30 p.m. Wednesdays; the JCC in West
Bloomfield: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays
and 6-7:30 p.m. Thursdays; and the
Jewish New 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. week-
days.
"The sale can only be successful if
people donate books and come to the
sale," says Jodi Goodman of West
Bloomfield, book sale chair. "We need
500 volunteers to work two-hour shifts.
It's a wonderful community project."
The pre-sale is from 8:45 a.m.-noon
Sunday, May 18, at Laurel Park Place in
Livonia; $5. No admission charge
Sunday noon-6 p.m. or Monday-
Wednesday, May 19-21, with all books
half-off on the last day. Weekday hours
are 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
