We're A People B y almost any measurement, the Festival of Passover is considered the most cele- brated of all Jewish holidays in the dias- pora, where levels of observance vary widely. The holiday recalls the Israelites' flight from Egyptian slavery and dogged pursuit of religious freedom. It reminds us that people can be slaves in more than a physical sense. In Israel, Pesach is almost universally celebrated. Ninety-four percent of Jewish Israelis attended a seder Wednesday night, according to a poll taken by the Israeli Hotel Association; 100,000 celebrat- ed at a hotel. Israeli families hosted hundreds of immigrant soldiers. May this year's Festival of Passover serve as common ground to bring diaspora and Israeli Jews closer together as world attention returns to the Arab-Israeli conflict — and the Jewish state's ongoing battle to repel Palestinian aggression.
