use trends. Besides introducing a num-
ber of bills related to environmental
protection, she introduced a bill that
would establish a violation of the
Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act for fail-
ing or refusing to provide equal com-
pensation for comparable work.

The Charity Aid, Recover and
Empowerment (CARE) Act passed
the Senate 95-5 on
April 9. The Act
includes two key pro-
visions for the Jewish
community.
The first relates to
the Social Services
Block Grant (SSBG),
which supports cru-
cial community-based
initiatives like adult
day care and Meals
on Wheels. The
CARE bill would
restore SSBG funding
to its 1995 level of

ble organizations without those funds

Michigan senators, Carl Levin and
Debbie Stabenow, voted in favor of
the measure. As Jewish agencies face
budget cuts, these two provisions
would provide a significant help to
vulnerable populations.
The focus now shifts to the House
where the legislation will be intro-
duced sometime after the break.
