Legislators At Work

Monthly update highlights actions
by Jewish lawmakers.

this monthly column to update and
inform readers about legislation impor-
tant to the Jewish community. The
Michigan Jewish Conference will cover
updates of the seven-member Michigan
Jewish Caucus. The Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan Detroit will
provide information about national leg-
islation and other issues important to
Detroit Jewry.

Lansing

• In addition to his role as House
Appropriations Committee chair,
State Rep. Marc Shulman, R-West
Bloomfield, introduced a bill desig-
nating a State Holocaust
Remembrance Day. In
addition, the week sur-
rounding that day would
be designated as Days of
Remembrance.
He also established the
private Shulman
Educational Opportunity
Fund for high school
seniors in West
Bloomfield and
Commerce Township.
Four scholarships will be
awarded this year based
on answers to several
essay questions. Entries
are due April 25. For

• State Sen. Burton
Leland, D-Detroit, the
longest-serving Jewish
legislator, has introduced
12 bills this session,
including legislation that would
allow voters to request an absentee
ballot without having to provide a
reason, and a bill that addresses
staffing ratios in Michigan's nursing
homes.
• In addition to her role as
Assistant Minority Floor Leader,
State Sen. Gilda Jacobs, D-
Huntington Woods, recently hosted
an informational seminar on pre-
scription drug discount programs,
with information available to
Michigan citizens at the Southfield

Public Library.
• In his first term, State Rep. Andy
Meisner, D-Ferndale, has been
appointed Assistant Whip for the
House Democrats, tracking the
Caucus' positions on legislation and
communicating concerns to the
Democratic leaders. He has intro-
duced legislation as part of a multi-
bill, bipartisan package to strengthen
Michigan's permit application sys-
tem, which would charge polluters
and toughen penalties for illegal
dumping into Michigan's waterways.
• In her first term, State Rep.
Shelley Goodman Taub, R-
Bloomfield Hills, is a member of the
House Appropriations Committee,
chairs the House Appropriations
