ters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Edward
"Teddy" and Gladys Allen, Geraldine
and Franklin Levy and Rose Monheit,
Rose Patrick, Edith Allen and Laura
Allen; caretaker and friend, Terry
Phillips. Mrs. Allen was the beloved wife
of the late Julius Allen; mother of the
late Judith B. Sandler.
Interment at Adat Shalom Memorial
Park Cemetery Contributions may be

CANTOR SIMON BERMANIS, 90,
former Detroiter of California, died Feb.
27, 2003. Born in Latvia, he studied
voice at the Vienna Conservatory of
Music. Emigrating to the United States
in 1947, he helped found the Cantors
Assembly, an arm of the Conservative
movement.
Cantor Bermanis served for 20 years
as cantor of the Park Synagogue in
Cleveland. From 1960-1980, he was
cantor at Congregation Beth Achim in
Detroit. After retiring to Rancho
Bernado, Calif, in 1980, he became one
of the founders of the Ner Tamid
Synagogue.
Cantor Bermanis received an hon-
orary doctorate of music from the
Jewish Theological. Seminary. During his
retirement he often filled in as cantor at
High Holiday services at various syna-
gogues in the San Diego area.
Cantor Bermanis is survived by his
wife, Alice; daughters, Janet Hirsh of
Woodland Hills, Calif, Beverly Foster of
Upland, Calif. Grandchildren, Sharon
Sachs, Adriene Bloom, Diane Merrigan,
Jason Saperstein, Marla Saperstein, Leslie
Saperstein; great-grandchildren, Spencer
Sachs, Taylor Sachs, Brandon Bloom,
Ethan Bloom, Riley Merrigan.

SAMUEL "SAM" COHEN, 86 of
West Bloomfield, died April 7, 2003.
He was a founder and owner of City
Smoked Fish in Detroit. He also owned
Bagel Deli in West Bloomfield. He was a
member of the National Fisheries
Institute.
Mr. Cohen is survived by his wife,
Pearl Cohen; son, Steven Cohen of West
Bloomfield; grandchildren, Benjamin
and Emily Cohen; sister-in-law and
brother-in-law, Gert Levine and Isadore
Levine.
Interment at Clover Hill Park
Cemetery. Contributions may be made
to the Cystic Fibrosis Association, 2265
Livernois, Suite 410, Troy, MI 48083.

IRVING GERSTEIN of Boca Raton,
Fla., died March 28, 2003.
He is survived by his beloved wife,
Frances Gerstein; son and daughter-in-
law, Lawrence and Barbara Gerstein of
Michigan; daughters and sons-in-law,
Nancy and Phillip Kallen, Deborah and
Evan Hausman-Bader; brother and sis-
ter-in-law, Maurice and Marilyn
Gerstein; sisters and brother-in-law, Irma
Israel, Eleanor and Bob Hannel; grand-
children, Pamela, Stacie, Jonathan,
Jaime, Lindsay, Jason, Daniel, Elyssa,
.Lauren, Mackenzie and Colin.
Interment in Florida. Contributions
may be made to the American Cancer
Society or a charity of one's choice. This
announcement was placed at the family's
request by Ira Kaufman Chapel.

ROSE GOLD, 92, of West Bloomfield,
died April 8, 2003. Ashe was a secretary
for Linda Hack at Models Affiliated.
Mrs. Gold is survived by her daughter,
Wilma Labell of West Bloomfield; sons
and daughters-in-law, Dr. Paul and
Linda Gold of Bloomfield Hills, Alan
and Terry Gold of West Bloomfield;
grandchildren, Steve Labell, Bruce
Labell, Scott Labell, Lisa Godfrey, Hedy
Gold, Leslie and Harold Nodler, Jason
and Juila Gold, Jennifer and Adam
Geffin; great-grandchildren, Rachel
Nodler, Drew and Nathan Labell; sister,
Minnie Broner of West Bloomfield.
Interment at Machpelah Cemetery.
